NOTES When dreamy, hooky crunch pop is done right, it melts your heart with out even trying. Even though, Seattle, Washington’s Argo is notoriously one of the hardest working bands in town, their preternatural ability to craft immediately perfect rock gems feels completely effortless—and triumphant. Now armed with a new lineup and a kind of working cohesiveness that loads of shows—several with Aqueduct, Architecture in Helsinki, and Viva Voce—and touring the West Coast brings, Argo is a band poised for constant positive progression. And why shouldn’t they be? The band’s 2004 release on Ana-them Records Jet Packs for Everyone, garnered substantial critical acclaim (“liberal vintage keyboard sounds sit smartly alongside the indie-rock textures, until DAMN! Hooks galore.” –The Stranger), received great College radio play, and Argo was even named a finalist in the 2005 Emerging Music Awards. Songwriters and multi-instrumentalists/vocalists Justin Benson and Matt Benham played together since childhood, before founding the band in 2001 with drummer/keyboard/vocalist Scott Leonard, and were later joined by bassist/vocalist Jon Wooster. Although some members have been involved longer than others, as Wooster explains, “Our songs are written collaboratively.” And it shows, especially at Argo’s live shows, where the band consistently lets intuition and teamwork push them to the next level, something Wooster adds is “a consistent element throughout the band.” When recorded, Argo captures the vivaciousness, loose energy of their live setup; there’s nothing calculated here. The band’s 2005 Needs EP is thick with infectious, danceable goodness, chalky, gritty solos that would make the Jicks proud, and enough warmth to melt the hardest of cynics who say the Pacific Northwest doesn’t have even more to offer.

ONTAYSO - Dia de los Muertos

U-cover is proud to present a brand new sublabel: U-COVER MINIDISC which will exclusively release 3"CDrs, all coming in a mini DVD case with full color design. U-COVER MINIDISC will be launched with a new release from Ontayso: 'Dia de los Muertos', a 20 minute long track based on their work for the Belgian dance company 'Radical low' and which was performed in a dance solo in Antwerp and Berlin. It is a dark ambient track built up from fieldrecordings and monoton guitarplay to end around a deep minimal subtle beat. The title 'Dia de los Muertos' (Day of the Dead- Mexico's known celebration dedicated to their dead beloved ones.) fits perfectly with Ontayso's new creation.

For the second release on the new U-cover minidisc label, Germans E.stonji (Jens Doering) known from his excellent electronic releases as Hp.stonji on Spezial Material teams up with singer/songwriter Reejk Lynur (Florian Gebhard). Light is a perfect blend of the harmonic songwriting and singing by reejk lynur with the harsh, melancholic electronic beats and tunes by e.stonji. The result brings a varies spectrum from ambient oriented tracks(the light) to some more danceable postrock indie rockers (one way). Charming release!

Merz

The opener to Merz's debut album, 'Many Weathers Apart', features perhaps one of the most hyperactive, excitable voices ever heard. Vocalist Conrad Lambert's pipes are a joy to behold on this album, mingling with horn sections on the slower numbers and modern electronic pulses on the faster tracks but almost invariably providing fascinating effects. 'Lotus' is dripping with beautiful melancholy (sample lyric: "Your beautiful name is always the same, I'll bring you chalk so you can write it on the wall") whilst 'CC Conscious' and 'Lovely Daughter' provide a frantic middle section of the album. And the closer 'A.M. (Good Morning)' possesses a relaxing charm which is what's needed after the listener has digested all the sounds created on this highly impressive beginning for Merz.

Cryptograms is the second full-length offering from Deerhunter, and their first for Kranky. The album took almost two years to finish and was the product of emotional, physical, and financial strain on the group. The result is an album that finds the band shifting from discordant catharsis, and forming a sonic identity that completely expresses the place from which they have arrived. The album functions in part as a study in duality and the concept of the same experiences seen from two angles, present and past. The most obvious manifestation of this is in the chronological sequencing. The first half of the album was recorded first unsuccessfully in 2005. These recordings were a blur at best, wordless and bordering on psychological atrophy. The sessions failed to provide anything tangible, and were racked with technical and personal problems, including out-of-tune pianos, panic attacks, and a tape machine that seemed to fail to capture the full spectrum of ambience the band was exploring. The band returned home, having failed, and considered giving up. The idea arose to give it one last shot and exactly one year from the date of the recording of their first self-titled LP at a small studio in rural GA, they returned to that same studio and plugged in. The session resulted in the first half of the record which was recorded in one day and completely filled the reel of tape they brought with them. Cryptograms' first side begins with an introduction leading to the title track, and ends with the tape literally spinning off the end of the reel in the middle of a drone layered with bells and accordion ("Red Ink"). The second half of the record, also recorded in one day, in the November of 2005, represents the band in an entirely different state. "Spring Hall Convert" opens with the line, "...so I woke up..." and introduces a set of focused psyche-pop songs fixating on adolescence, illness, and failing connections.
