Never Lose That Feeling Volume 2 is a compilation album, featuring some of more interesting indie bands of today covering songs from yesteryear’s classic Shoegaze bands. AC 30 from England, is the label that released this album and they seem to be a big purveyor of the shoegaze scene in England, putting on “…regular live music nights in London featuring the best in noisy guitar, dreampop, post-rock and electronica, as well as regular dedicated djs.”
When I glanced over the tracklist, a few songs and bands jumped out immediately. The first item to catch my attention was Fiel Garvie. They put out one of the better albums of this year called “Caught Laughing,” so I was intrigued to hear them again and when I saw the track they would cover, I was even more excited. The song was “Blue Thunder” and it could only have been Galaxie 500’s original (to bad they didn’t attempt to cover the alt. Sax version). The next track featured the band “Hartfield” and, with that, I was sold on checking out this album. Hartfield is a Japanese duo, featuring boy/girl vocals and the dreamy shoegaze sound, mixed in with an abundance of indie pop flavors. Hartfield’s “True Color True Lies” is an awesome album and I would enthusiastically recommend that one to anyone. As a cherry on top…the song Hartfield covered would be my personal favorite song by My Bloody Valentine called “Soon.” Other notable artists performing on this album would be Sing-Sing (Emma Anderson from Lush), Britta Phillips (bassist for Luna), Viet Cong Blues Project (Robert Dillam from Adorable), and Paula Kelley (from Drop Nineteens).
Highlights on the album comes generally from those artists mentioned earlier. Fiel Garvie does an admirable job with G500’s “Blue Thunder.” The song lacks that overwhelming “epic” feel of the original, but in its place you do get a pretty cover song that doesn’t embarrass either band. Hartfield bravely attempts to cover MBV’s “Soon,” which has to be one of the most “jaw dropping” tunes ever to be recorded. Instead of trying to recreate that unattainable studio sound of the original, Hartfield dishes up a decidedly lofi cover of “Soon” They speed up the tempo, while the rhythm guitar sounds almost country’ish in the JAMC’s “Stoned & Dethroned” kind of way. Paula Kelley’s cover of Ride’s “Vapour Trail” would be one of the better tracks on the album. Sweet voice she has and she adds an enchanting feel to the original. Britta Phillips “How You Satisfy Me” sounds absolutely fantastic, that would be the highlight of the album for me. Other tracks to check out : Hammocks “Black Metallic,”
Like most tribute albums go, you won’t find any “spectacular” songs (a few past exceptions that comes to mind : the Pixies “Winterlong,” Nirvana’s “Here She Comes Now” and New Order’s “Sister Ray”), but there are plenty of interesting moments on Never Lose That Feeling #2 that will bring a big smile on the faces of fans from the shoegaze genre.
