         郯?   tenure in Mouse on Mars, Microstoria, and as       郯?
         郯?   Lithops. (The name of Jan's solo work has always   郯?
         郯?   struck me as deceptively gentle. Lithops are       郯?
         郯?   plants from Namibia and South Africa also known    郯?
         郯?   as "living stones" for their梔ing!梔eceptive       郯?
         郯?   appearance.)                                       郯?
         郯?                                                      郯?
         郯?   It's all in there, or much of it, on Mound         郯?
         郯?   Magnet. More so than on the other Lithops          郯?
         郯?   releases, each of which could be said to comprise  郯?
         郯?   a narrower set of oft-lucid investigations. Two    郯?
         郯?   of Jan's most recent releases ?Mouse on Mars's    郯?
         郯?   space funk juggernaut Radical Connector and        郯?
         郯?   Lithops' quite fabulous and to my mind underrated  郯?
         郯?   (dunno, maybe I had my head beneath a lithops)     郯?
         郯?   and smeary and sometimes vicious Scrypt (find it   郯?
         郯?   if you don't know it)梐re two of the more          郯?
         郯?   dissimilar records in the batch containing his     郯?
         郯?   fingerprints. Mound Magnet makes cheerful          郯?
         郯?   overtures towards commonalities. "Vortext," one    郯?
         郯?   of Mound Magnet's sublimities, means that you no   郯?
         郯?   longer have to imagine Scryptlike grit'n'snot put  郯?
         郯?   into service of sirens (inhuman upward glisses)    郯?
         郯?   summoning you to the dance floor. Why don't you    郯?
         郯?   spin "Vortext" this very second and tell me if     郯?
         郯?   you agree? Equidistant from梑etween桼adical        郯?
         郯?   Connector and the futuristic, sprayed daubs and    郯?

         郯?   hearing? Uni Umit, the first Lithops record on     郯?
         郯?   Moikai; Mouse on Mars's Idiology; the              郯?

         郯?   MoM's Niun Niggung; much besides. Hearing it all   郯?
         郯?   in there . . . somewhere . . . is less a matter    郯?
         郯?   of being fooled than of trusting . . . in . . .    郯?
         郯?   accumulated . . . wisdom. Non-renunciation.        郯?
         郯?   That's something that has kept me coming back to   郯?
         郯?   each new record of MoM/Microstoria/Lithops. Jan    郯?
         郯?   St. Werner is less the perpetual refugee from and  郯?
         郯?   much more perpetually astride these multiple       郯?
         郯?   musical worlds.                                    郯?
         郯?                                                      郯?
         郯?   Non-renunciation, and yet Lithops always reminds   郯?
         郯?   me of how far we've drifted from electronic        郯?
         郯?   music's presumed utilitarian function as dance     郯?
         郯?   music. I'm not reminded of this because Lithops    郯?
         郯?   has drifted into the ether of contemporary         郯?
         郯?   composition, or that he (it) has become all        郯?
         郯?   whooshily texture-centric and now creates sand     郯?
         郯?   mandalas out of granulated audio. No! It's         郯?
         郯?   because of the varied afterlives of the break      郯?
         郯?   beat, the shake beat, of shed skin and abandon     郯?
         郯?   seat. MoM's Radical Connector really was a         郯?
         郯?   classically-styled funk album, spaceship torch     郯?
         郯?   songs and all. "Funk" here桰 guess I'm still       郯?
         郯?   talking about "Vortext," but also about "Stakes    郯?
         郯?   Barrier," "Cephalopod," and "Harpoon Point"梚s a   郯?
         郯?   series of improvised gestures . . . How to         郯?
         郯?   further describe? [Actor makes karate-chop         郯?
         郯?   gestures.] "Stakes Barrier" in particular seems    郯?
         郯?   like a particularly sinister afterlife of a rave   郯?
         郯?   misremembered. "Peek," avowedly otherwise,         郯?
         郯?   revisits the stumble beat (hello Bolan, hello      郯?
         郯?   Oehlen).                                           郯?
         郯?                                                      郯?
         郯?   Nobody said that Lithops was built to get the      郯?
         郯?   joint jumping. And yet, and yet厖. Less            郯?
         郯?   cartoonish, perhaps, but no less funny. When you   郯?
         郯?   have ceased to expect it, there's the revenge of   郯?
         郯?   the trashy drum machine, the bedroom electric      郯?
         郯?   guitar, of overdriven stepwise samples you had     郯?
         郯?   understood to be banished in the bright dawn of    郯?
         郯?   Lithops. Nope. It's almost all in there.           郯?
         郯?                                                      郯?
         郯?   You should be so lucky as to misremember a music   郯?
         郯?   so vivid.                                          郯?

     Any press release that encourages your imagination to combine
     Sun-Ra  with  The Raincoats is gonna prickle your curiosity is
     it not? Pah! I thought when THE NEW SOUND OF NUMBERS  hit the
     stereo on Monday. My head wasn't geared up for this jerky,
     clattering new wave space rock malarkey. But here I am 2 days
     later UTTERLY spellbound by 'Liberty Seeds', a fascinating CD
     on  Cloud Recordings. This is beautiful, absorbing
     hypno-therapeutic music. A multi layered odyssey through lo-fi
     shamble rock territory, dreamy (early) Stereolab-esque vocals,
     spaced out organic effects, fascinating subtle discordance.
     It's all here in spades. One of my fave adjectives is
     "kaleidoscopic" This album is just that. There's a whole
     musical safari park of mesmerising, pure SOUND on this album
     plus some really endearing, beautiful songs. We can hear some
     early Sonic Youth in their embryonic tribal voodoo period,
     bits of  The Slits, Delta 5 in the jungle,  ESG on peyote,
     even some of the witchy magic from that  Leopard Leg/T.I.T.S.
     split a few weeks ago. God knows what else. What a fantastic
     album. We really can't push this anymore. We'll burst if we

Following the release of his work as part of the
electro-acoustic quartet Minamo on 12k (12k1031, 2005) and the
proto-pop outing under his new moniker Filfla (Plop, 2005),
Fourcolor (Keiichi Sugimoto) is back with his second release on
12k, Letter of Sounds. His previous work, Air Curtain (12k1029)
was a critical success selling out the first pressing in little
over one month.

On Air Curtain, Fourcolor explored new directions, building
upon delicate, implied rhythmic structures moving away from the
strictly drone based material on his debut cd Water Mirror
(Apestaartje, 2004). With Letter of Sounds Sugimoto pushes his
sound even further by bringing the rhythms more to the
foreground and taking influences from his previous, more
pop-based work, as Filfla. The album uses many dominant
rhythmic structures such as on the opener "02" which couples
catchy guitar harmonic hooks with sliced melodic beats or the
beautiful "Rowboat" in which Sugimoto collaborates with
long-time friend Naoko Sasaki/Piana (Happy) using a variety of
instrumentation and vocals. Similarly, a majority of the work
on Letter of Sounds finds itself working around tight,
syncopated micro-rhythms.

Of course Letter of Sounds is not without its delicate
undercurrents and warm, stretched-out, whispy tones that have
become signature to Sugimoto's sound (the gorgeous finale
"Frame"), but his desire for a more up-front and structured
approach continues the evolution from a style he has mastered
into new, more challenging territory, and expands his palette
as an artist.

* packaging note: as Fourcolor's cd Air Curtain (12k1029, 2004)
was the commercial introduction of the revised 12k logo, Letter
of Sounds launches a new, more streamlined digipack design in
celebration of 12k's upcoming 10-year anniversary. In addition
to the changes in layout the new digipacks feature a matte
varnish which allows for richer colors and sharper lines than
the previous digipacks.
